Who founded Tom Ford?

 

Tom Carlyle Ford is an American fashion designer and filmmaker, who is also the founder of the luxury brand, Tom Ford.

Born in 1961 in Austin, Texas, Ford spent most of his childhood in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In his teens, He would later move to New York, where he enrolled at New York University. At first, he was taking courses in Art history, but he would later redirect his studies to architecture at Parsons School of Design in New York and Paris. He then terminated his training at Parsons in New York.

 

In 1990, Ford moved to Milan to become the Designer for Gucci’s womenswear. In 1992, He then worked as the Design Director for two years, before he was chosen as the Creative Director of Gucci. Here he was in charge of the design for all product lines, from clothing to perfume, image branding, advertising campaigns, and finally store design.

 

In addition to his then existing duties at Gucci, Ford assumed the position of Creative Director of Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche and YSL Beaute in January 2000. Ford and the creative teams at YSL worked to define the overall image and positioning of the brand, including all product categories and communication activities. He also served as the Creative Director of Gucci Group and was later, in 2002, made the vice-chairman of the management board of Gucci Group before he resigned his position in 2004.

 

With such involvement, Ford turned out to be Gucci’s savior. In just a decade he managed to turn around the business, as the Creative Director of Gucci and Gucci group increasing sales from $230 Mio. in 1994 to almost $3 bio. in 2003, making the brand one of the largest and most profitable luxury brands in the world. 

 

Not only that did Ford in 2005 announce the opening of his own film production company, Fade To Black, in which he directed, produced, and co-wrote his first feature film “A Single Man”. The film later received multiple awards and nominations.

  • In 2017, the first beauty store opened in London.

    • As of 2017, there was an estimate of $1 billion in sales at Tom Ford Beauty, owned by Estée Lauder.
