Slacks are a type of men's trousers that are designed to be more comfortable and relaxed than dress pants. They typically have a looser fit in the hips and thighs and are made from lighter-weight fabrics like cotton or linen. You can usually find slacks with a pattern, plaids & checks are very popular patterns for a pair of slacks. Slacks will often have elasticated waists also, giving them even more comfort.

Dress Pants & Trousers vs. Slacks - What's the difference?

All slacks are dress pants, but not all dress pants are slacks. Slacks are a type of dress pants. A good way to judge whether or not something is a pair of dress pants or a pair of slacks is to ask yourself "Would I play golf in these?" - If the answer is yes, they are probably slacks - if your answer is "No way! I can't move properly and I don't want to get these dirty!" Then the answer is you're probably wearing a pair of dress pants.

Slacks are normally elasticated, and much more comfortable than a pair of dress pants. A pair of dress pants will normally come as part of a suit, and therefore it's obvious that they are dress pants because they're the trousers from a suit.

What are Dress Slacks?

Dress Slacks are just another word for dress pants, which are basically the same thing. The difference is minimal, but we thought we'd mention this so people don't get confused.

Are Cinos and Khakis Slacks?

Khakis are a light cotton material normally and are pleated. They are normally a light brown color, which in the US is known as Khaki (although in Britain this is a completely different color - so it does get a bit confusing) - Khakis and Cinos are similar but not the same.

Cinos are a type of men's pants with certain features. They aren't pleated like khaki pants, since they're never folded, and come in any color you choose. They have small internal compartments and are very flexible. Cotton is usually the material used to make them. They're also known as "preppy" because they have a similar 'casual-formal' feel to them.

However - neither of these are slacks - because both of them have a much slimmer fit than slacks, and therefore can't really be considered to be the same.

What should you wear with slacks?

One of the dominant looks right now in Italy is a pair of slacks with a sweater. This gives you an incredibly refined look - this is often paired with a pair of loafers, and not wearing any socks. This allows all of the focus of people to be on your slacks, and trust me this look will blow you away.

You can pair some slacks with anything really, another great idea would be to pair it with a blazer with a similar pattern, and then effectively you're wearing a suit. Put on a pair of dress shoes, and then match this with a pressed white shirt and no tie for a true business casual look.

Finally, you can simply pair a pair of slacks with a simple polo shirt - although a lot of people don't know this, Polo Shirts are considered to be business casual.
